About

The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE CIS) and the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA) have decided to jointly celebrate the centenary of Lotfi A. Zadeh (1921-2017), to pay tribute to the creator of fuzzy set theory, an active member of both our societies.

We are pleased to give voice to those who knew him and appreciated him around the world to remind us what a scientist and what a man he was. A few videos prepared by some of his old friends will be posted on the page below. Many thanks to all those who provided photos from their collections to participate in this commemoration.

They will tell us about some of the moments spent with him. If you met Lotfi Zadeh, you are welcome to write short testimonials about his achievements and his personality and to upload photos with him in our Collabratec Community.

The IEEE History Center is a not-for-profit organization which relies on your support to preserve, research, and promote the legacy of electrical engineering and computing.

Mission and Resources

The mission of the IEEE History Center is to preserve, research and promote the history of information and electrical technologies. The Center maintains many useful resources for the engineer, for the historian of technology, and for anyone interested in the development of electrical and computer engineering and their role in modern society. The History Center building is not a museum, and does not contain artifacts or exhibits, being merely offices and the library. Visiting scholars and researchers are welcome to use our research library and archives, by appointment only. To make an appointment, please contact ieee-history@ieee.org and see the Center's location and contact information.

Most of the Center's resources are available online at the Engineering and Technology History Wiki. The Center’s holdings include the IEEE Archives, which consist of the unpublished records of IEEE and a collection of historical photographs relating to the history of electrical and computer technologies, and a collection of oral history transcripts of pioneering engineers. The Center runs several other programs, internships and fellowships relating to the history of IEEE and its technologies. Within IEEE, the History Center is part of IEEE Corporate Activities, and it is co-sponsored by Stevens Institute of Technology, where it is affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters. The Center's activities are documented by its Newsletter, published three times per year.

Oral History Project: The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society's awards recognize excellent achievements and outstanding volunteers in the field. Among these awards, the Pioneer Award is perhaps the most coveted society-level award. To preserve some of the historical memories of these pioneers, we have created the Oral History Project, consisting of a set of interviews with some of these pioneers. By clicking on this link (IeeeTV_CIS_Videos), you will be able find 30 interviews, which are part of this ongoing project.

Additional Resources:

Operation: Records at the history center are open files. Any contributor can make contributions to our historical records at any time. Volunteered contributions, updates, corrections and suggestions are welcome. Contributors are encouraged to submit their suggestions to the chair of the history committee, who will present them to the committee at its next meeting. Contributions will be added to our records upon recommendation by the history committee, and approval by the administrative committee of the society.

Contents: Two types of information are currently available through links from our website:

  1. Annual data Sheets are downloadable pdf files that encapsulate the most important events of the society in written form. Here you will find information about the administrative structure and officers of the society; members of the standing and technical committees; a listing of the conferences and conference records sponsored by the society; references for archival publications, newsletters and books; a listing of the awards and prizes made by the society; short descriptions of the most important actions taken by the administrative (AdCom) and executive (ExCom) committees; and anecdotes about actions and events of general historical interest to the membership of the IEEE CIS. Each file has a glossary, and possibly, some citations for publications mentioned in the text for that year. Clicking on any link below automatically downloads a pdf file for that year.
