Missions: The CIS Summer Schools are designed for senior undergraduate, graduate students, post-doc and young researchers who are willingly to deepen their skills in computational intelligence and related areas. The objective is to stimulate them to involve in rapidly evolving fields, and to foster participation in the adventure of research.
Dates and Length: The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Summer Schools are held not only in summer but all year around. The length of each summer school is expected to last from 3 days to 1 week.
Format: Summer Schools usually consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, and visits to local academic organizations or industries. Lectures will be given by international scholars working in computational intelligence and interdisciplinary areas from fundamental theory to applications.
Fundings: The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society will co-finance approved summer schools and the organizing institution will cover other expenses. The participants may need to partially contribute with the registration fee to compensate the expenses of local living and inviting lectures. Part of the budget can be dedicated to support the institution that holds the school while helping to provide funding for inviting Distinguished Lecturers through the CIS DL Program.
Benefits of Participants: Summer Schools will provide accommodation and meals to registered participants. The participants will be given a chance to meet peer researchers, international scholars (especially young scientists), to discuss hot topics and on-going research, and also to experience local industry and culture.
The IEEE CIS Summer School Subcommittee, a subcommittee under Education Committee of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, is responsible for operating issues such as evaluating proposals, coordinating local host, selecting participants, and determining the topic of each summer school.
In particular, but not limited to the following, the Summer Schools Subcommittee members help to:
- Advertise the summer school by distributing call for summer school proposals to interested local host and call for participants to senior undergraduate, graduate students, post-doc and young researchers.
- Solicit potential local host and financial support.
- Evaluate summer school proposals and coordinate with the local host to select a suitable topic, place, date.
- Propose lecturer for the summer school based on the topic or theme.
- Coordinate discussions and other activities during the summer school.
Any researcher or organization who is interested in holding an IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Summer School needs to submit a proposal to the Summer School Subcommittee.
Your proposal should have the following items:
- Location, Date and Duration;
- Scientific objectives or theme;
- Courses and lecturers;
- A tentative schedule;
- Potentials for financial support.
Call for 2019 Summer Schools Proposals (CFP)
- Eligible period: 1 May 2019 to 31 December 2019
- Deadline for submitting the proposal: 1 April 2019 (late submissions may also be considered, but subject to the availability of the budget balance)
- Notification of the outcome of the review process: 15 April 2019
You are encouraged to submit a proposal to hold a CIS summer school in Computational Intelligence from May to December 2019. If the proposal is approved, and upon request, CIS will provide a financial contribution to support the initiative. The amount of the financial support from CIS depends on the available budget, the number of financed proposals and the soundness of the school budget. We recall that organizers can take advantage of other initiatives, e.g., the CIS Distinguished Lecture Program to further support the school (related regulations apply).
The CIS Summer schools subcommittee will review received proposals based on the following criteria:
- The quality of the proposed technical program and topic balance;
- The length of the school;
- The geographical balance of the proposals.
In writing your proposal, please address the following aspects:
- Aim and target.
- Courses and lecturers.
- Tentative program.
- Local organizer(s).
- Registration and accommodation.
- School budget, financial sponsor(s) and requested co-finance from CIS.
